PSYCHOTHERAPY
COUPLES & FAMILY
THERAPY

WHAT IS COUPLES THERAPY?
Couples therapy focuses on providing psychotherapy to partners in a committed relationship in an effort to repair or improve the relationship, resolve conflicts, improve communication, and sometimes determine relationship goals. Couples therapy focuses on treating the relationship itself, rather than individuals separately.

WHAT IS FAMILY THERAPY?

Family therapy differs from individual therapy in that it focuses on the well-being of the family as a whole. Each member of a family is considered as a part of a whole, and family therapy sessions focus on improving the overall mental health and functioning of the family. This may include focusing on strengthening or healing relationships within the family, learning strategies to improve communication with one another, providing education to family members about mental health issues occurring for members of the family, or learning to manage conflicts more effectively and peacefully.

WHAT ARE FAMILY OR COUPLES
SESSIONS LIKE?
Family or couples therapy sessions last between 30 and 60 minutes (average session is 45 minutes) and are scheduled flexibly to meet your needs. At the start of the psychotherapy process, clients will develop a set of goals that will be the main focus of therapy sessions, directing the course of our work together. However, many clients find that they need to discuss current concerns during session and treatment goals are adjusted throughout the course of therapy.
WHO BENEFITS FROM COUPLES OR
FAMILY THERAPY?

From time to time, families and couples experience stress or problems that can be helped by family or couples therapy. Sometimes families and couples seek support to better manage parenting, the death of a loved one, marital issues such as infidelity, financial stress or separation, or other stressful events or life transitions. Therapy benefits can include a significant reduction in feelings of distress, better communication, increased satisfaction in interpersonal relationships, greater personal awareness and insight, increased skills for managing stress and resolutions to specific problems. However, outcomes are based on an individual-to-individual basis and are not guaranteed.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

Although therapy may have potential risks, such risks are small and minimized as much as possible through work with a skilled therapist. Risks may include experiencing uncomfortable feelings, such as sadness, guilt, anxiety, anger, frustration, loneliness and helplessness. At times, you may be required to discuss unpleasant aspects of your life.

Psychotherapy requires an active effort on your part, including practicing strategies discussed outside of sessions. Goals and the course of treatment will mutually be determined by the client (you) and the therapist (me). The length of therapy and the techniques used will be directly related to the identified goals and your needs.
